These straight sections are usable as airstrips in emergency situations.

    Ok, in a case of "did not do the research" it turns out I was mistaken.

    According to the U.S. Dept. of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration, this in an urban legend that has become so widespread it's impossible to dispel: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/interstate/faq.htm#question30
